I don't think they would break, but she's broken stuff before. She really likes to bite.

That's fair! When you don't have hands or eyes, it's hard to interact with things in ways other than biting.

[Hina squeaks happily. She flutters around Evangeline and then perches on Rinku's head again.]

Yeah, a lot of things are hard for her. I'm sure she'll find other stuff she likes to do, though!

I hope so! What hobbies would be good with her physiology... does she like music?

[Hina squeaks in a vague approximation of a song. Mecchan warbles along with her -- maybe it's a game?]

She's tried to play Mecchan's toy piano sometimes! Except by bonking her face into the keys.

[Notably, she does not clarify whether it was any good... but Evangeline has already seen that and knows the answer is no.]

Yeah, I don't think keyboard-based instruments are the way to go here. But she could do, like, a harmonica I think?

Oh, yeah! As long as she didn't get her teeth stuck. What do you think, Hina-chan?

[Hina squeaks contemplatively. What's a harmonica? She chews on Rinku's braid.]

[If she had to guess how to interpret 'squeak and chew braid'...]

I guess she's not sure either.

That's what trying is for! Maybe I should take her and Mecchan to the store to try out the instruments. At least the toy ones.

Even if they don't find anything they really like, I think a trip like that would be fun! You should record them and send it to me.

[Hina squeaks excitedly. Mecchan warbles -- is she sure it won't be scary?]

Yeah, it'll be fun! Though I could bring you a cardboard box to hide under again if you get nervous about playing in front of other people.

[He contemplates this.]

Lots of people get nervous about playing music in front of people. That's pretty normal, I think. It's okay.

[Mecchan blows a bubble. He looks at Evangeline and nods nervously, and Rinku pets him.]

Yeah! Neechan's right. And it's not a show, so you won't have a big audience!

[Mecchan relaxes and smiles. Hina, for her part, starts rocking from side to side and squeaking.]

Eh? Hina-chan, are you trying to sing? I guess that means you wanna go try out the instruments?

I think she's excited for it! She's singing and dancing.

[Or at least, kind of singing and sort of dancing?]

[Rinku reaches up and pets Hina. Both of them smile wide.]

Yeah! It'll be a lot of fun! And hey, if you guys don't figure out what you want to do here, that's fine. You have lots of time to think about it!

[Mecchan looks relieved. He's still worried about what he wants to be when he grows up... he's a Sobble, why is he even worrying about that?]

Yeah, you guys are still pretty young.

[...How long do Pokemon usually live, anyway? She's thinking of them as kids still, but maybe that's not accurate?]

[Well, one is 0 years old and one can barely spell his own name, and at least Rinku thinks they're kids even if they're not sure! Mecchan makes a happy noise, and Hina squeak-sings a little more.]

Did you always know what you wanted to do, Neechan? I didn't. I kinda still don't, at least here.

Nnnot at all. When I was writing my resume thinking about jobs here I could apply for, I was saying things like, "Well, I'm used to working around bad smells, so I could probably be a garbage collector." Lelouch had to nudge me to start thinking about a job I wanted to do.

[roundandaround]

Huh, I guess so... It just feels like research is perfect for you! You're always working hard at it, and it seems like it makes you happy.

It does. I like having a job that actually helps other people, and I've been able to do some really important things to help that way.

[roundandaround]

I'm proud of you! You're always helping people and you're really smart. I wish everyone could be happy like that at work.

[abnormalizes]

Even in a nice world, there are probably still going to be some jobs people don't like but someone has to do anyway, right? Like, I don't know anybody who's emotionally fulfilled by working at a fast food place.

Maybe it would be better if people treated the workers nicer?

That's true, but I don't know how good it could get even if customers weren't rude and your manager wasn't a dick.
