Hmmm, that's a really good question. I've heard of familiars - they're sort of like magical pets, it seems like? People do address loved ones as 'pet' sometimes, but to refer to a loved one as a pet is rude. It's weird that one is considered degrading and one of them isn't, but that's how it is.
If you were to call me 'familiar'? I think I would be happy hearing it from you.
