I can understand that. When I was growing up, we rarely had any extra money to do anything special for birthdays, so they were pretty much just like any other day.

Exactly. It's not as though I'd be opposed to celebrating one, but I just don't really think about it.

Still, a few of the people from my world gave me gifts, and that was very kind of them. It was a good day.

My apartment is pretty sparsely filled as it is. What would someone even need with all of those belongings? I'm sure there are mansions just like that - here and other places.

From what I know about rich people? There's no limit to the amount of luxuries you can get if you've never had to worry about money. Even enough to fill a mansion.

You're right about that. It's nothing I've ever known, though. Ha. Even the idea is laughable.

Imagine having so much money that you can just buy things any time you have the whim to get something. Wild.

Me neither. Like, objectively I know rich people exist, but I have no idea what mindset feels like.

I've certainly met one or two. I know what impression they give off, at least, but as for putting myself in their shoes, I really can't imagine at all.

That could have been us. If we'd been born in different circumstances, our lives would've been completely different.

Honestly, I don't like to think about it too much. It just makes me uselessly jealous of a hypothetical version of myself.

I've given into thought like that a time or two as well. You know plenty about our world by now, and why I might think that way. But I never spent all that much time on it. You can't help what you're born into.

Right. We can't change our circumstances, we can only make the most of them.

Maybe I thought at one time that we could - change our circumstances, I mean. But I think you're probably right about that, Evangeline. You've put it very well.

I think it depends. Sometimes you do have the opportunity to change things in your world, but for me, I'm not willing to risk my life or my family's lives to try to start a revolution or whatever it is some people say I should do.

[Sometimes you take that opportunity, you risk those lives, you fight that battle - you try and try and try.

[And it changes nothing.]

I wish I could bring my parents here. They'd be so happy. I'm sure you'd like them, too.
