...But if they never know, you're always going to worried about them finding out and rejecting you, right? You'll never get a chance to find out if they would love you for you are, that way.

[Now there was the other reaction she showed when she was afraid. A flare of anger.]

[Still gentle.] Are you sure? I have a lot of friends who I know aren't human, and I like them plenty.

[Hugging the doll in her arms a little tighter- the anger and fear all falling out at once.]

They didn't- so- so- why should anyone else!

Well - sometimes it depends on the place you're in. When you're in a scary place, people are more likely to be scared, right? But this is a nice place.

[That was enough to make her think- the momentary pause slowing the flow of her anger into something more restless than vicious.]

...I think they were scared, in the gallery.

Even I wanted to leave that place. It was dark, and lonely, even with the rest of the artwork there.
